    Does your student need accessible educational materials and technologies to increase participation, productivity, and independence in ways that improve outcomes? If so, this session is for you!  Cynthia and Diana will lead educators and families through seven points in the IEP development process at which AEM might reasonably be considered and documented. Participants will be provided with AEM-related questions aligned to each point and examples of language for documenting AEM and accessible technologies in IEPs in ways that support students' effective use of them for learning.

    All students need useful learning materials in order to access, participate, and achieve in the general curriculum. The standard print and digital learning materials that are purchased by school districts and used in the classroom are not always accessible or usable by all students. Ohio accepted an invitation as one of eight states to participate with the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials in the AEM Best Practices Cohort project. This panel featuring national, state, and district representatives discusses issues at both the policy and practical level.

In 2015, the U.S. Department of Education launched the #GoOpen Initiative, a campaign to encourage states, school districts and educators to use openly licensed educational materials.     This presentation will demonstrate specific actions and strategies to prepare learners with disabilities to transition to college with the prerequisite skills to request and use accessible educational materials (AEM) and accessible technologies. It will include examples of how AEM can be included in the IEP and used by students as they progress through elementary and secondary grades, ensuring they are independent users by the time they leave high school. Participants will leave the presentation with action steps to prepare students to be full participants in the interactive process for receiving AEM-related services and accommodations in the post-secondary setting.

Finding yourself burned by thinking something was accessible when, in fact, it wasn’t, at least not for you or your family member or your student? If so, this session is for you! Add your voice to a lively discussion about the term accessible and what it means for people across a broad scope of human function and at all stages of life. Topics discussed will include a functional definition of accessibility, the moving target of accessibility, the importance of asking the right questions, and how to locate and use supporting resources on the AEM Center website and other locations.

    Do you know a student who may need accessible materials and technologies? Wondering how and where they fit in the IEP development process? Confused about where and how to document them in the IEP? If so, this session is for you! After a brief overview of accessible materials and technologies, participants will add their voices and ideas to a discussion of the seven points in the IEP development process at which accessible materials and technologies might reasonably be considered and documented. Participants will be provided with questions aligned to each point and examples of language that could be used at each point to support effective use of accessible materials by students who need them for participation and progress on IEP goals and in general education curriculum.
