    The four principles of POUR will be applied to STEM-related course content through a series of material makeover demonstrations. Common examples of materials created by K-12 and higher ed STEM faculty will be first displayed in traditional formats, followed by POUR-aligned accessible versions. Skills will include the application of MathML in documents and websites to make mathematical and scientific notation accessible; best practices for writing alt text and descriptions for technical images, charts, and graphics; and creating closed captions and audio descriptions for video.

The POUR model from the W3C will be used as a guide you can use for creating your own accessible educational materials. The four principles of POUR: Perceivable means that learners can see and hear the content presented in a material; Operable means that learners can interact with the content with a variety of tools; Understandable means that learners can understand the content and enjoy a predictable experience; and Robust means that the content works well with current and future technologies. The AEM Center tool, Designing for Accessibility with POUR, which includes tutorials for specific skills related to each principle, will be used as a resource. Common examples of teacher-created materials will be first displayed in traditional formats, followed by POUR-aligned accessible versions. Quality Indicators with Critical Components for the Provision of AEM, developed by the National Center on Accessible Educational Materials, guide K-12 state and local agencies, higher ed institutions, and workforce development programs in planning, implementing, and evaluating dynamic, coordinated systems for the timely provision of AEM. A comprehensive procurement system that includes accessibility can streamline the provision of AEM by addressing multiple factors, including compliance, timely delivery, written guidelines, learning opportunities, data collection, data use, and allocation of resources. Come to this session to reflect, discuss, and take away a self-assessment tool that you can bring back to your school for monitoring continuous progress.

    The National AEM Center invites you to participate in a free professional development opportunity to improve the accessibility of the materials your students use for learning. Many students with disabilities experience barriers to using curriculum materials due to physical, sensory, or learning disabilities. The outcome of the offered professional development is that you will improve your students’ access to the same curriculum materials as their classmates. And, we’re certain that you’ll discover that accessibility improves the quality of your curriculum for all learners. For this activity, we’re targeting educators in their first, second, or third year of teaching; however, we welcome all interested participants. Small groups from the same school or district are encouraged.
