Determination of Need

In this section, teams think about whether this student 1) can gain information from print-based instructional materials used across the curriculum by all students, 2) needs materials in a specialized format, or 3) needs modified content or alternative materials.

Choose the statement that best describes this student:

  • The team anticipates that this student will make adequate progress reading and gaining information from grade-level print-based materials. Evidence indicates that specialized formats of the instructional materials are not needed at this time. Additional decision points and information contained in the Navigator are not relevant to this student.

  • Evidence indicates that this student cannot use print-based instructional materials effectively at this time. The team anticipates that the student will make adequate progress if exactly the same information is presented in one or more specialized formats (e.g., braille, large print, audio, or digital text).

  • Evidence indicates that this student cannot use typical print-based materials effectively at this time due to a disability that impacts comprehension of information. The decision points and information contained in the AEM Navigator are primarily related to specialized formats; however, learning more about AEM by completing the decisions points in the Navigator may be useful when selecting materials for this student.
